3 Boxing Tips For Beginners

The boxing world can seem daunting to a beginner.

The first three things that you'll need to get straight in your head is that you'll be anxious as you will be getting punches thrown at you.  You are required to be incredibly fit, and on top of both of those, there is plenty of technique to learn.

Here are some basics to get you started:

Try to Relax

When you look around a beginners class you'll see others with tense muscles and clenched jaws, you'll see they're nervous, so relax, and you'll be in a better place. 

In addition to being mentally relaxed, when your muscles are relaxed, it helps your power and speed improve.

Correct Breathing

If you are panicking as you would underwater, irregular breathing will tire you just as much as throwing air punches. 

When your trainer introduces you to the punching bag, take a breath before and after every thrown combination.  Sticking to this as a pattern over time will enhance your power and improve your stamina, allowing you to go deeper into a fight.  

When an opponent is attacking you its easy to panic and breathe heavily, so conditioning yourself in training will help you keep control in pressure situations too.

Footwork

It's easy to think about punching and nothing but punching.

Smart, swift footwork is critical to both your offence and defence. 

Being on the balls of your feet is vital and ensuring there's not much weight on your front foot are two good starting tips, if you are to front heavy, you won't avoid your opponents punches in time and move forward to position yourself to throw a punch. 

It would help if you always were on the balls of your feet, not putting too much weight on your front foot. Otherwise, it takes too long for you to move out of the way of a punch or to move towards your opponent to strike.

When in training on the pads, the bag or with a sparring partner practice at all times being light on your feet. Taking punishment is not the way to start your boxing journey.
